Janelle Monae @ SummerStage

Janelle Monae w/ Little Jackie, Jose James, and Gilles Peterson A day of performances that bring urban funk, soul, and R&B into the sunlight. Presented in association with Giant Step. Wondaland Arts Society, artist, Janelle Monáe was recently signed by Sean "Diddy" Combs to Bad Boy Records, and her upcoming album Metropolis, co-produced by Big Boi, promises to be an exciting debut. A charismatic performer, Monáe has an innovative style that cannot be classified, crossing the genres of R&B, funk, and rock 'n' roll. She collaborated with OutKast for the movie soundtrack Idlewild. Channeling the voice of Gil Scott Heron, Jose James brings a fresh voice to jazz with his debut album, The Dreamer. As a potent composer and songwriter, he has adroitly mastered re-interpretations like “Park Bench People,” from 90’s rap collective, Freestyle Fellowship, as well as his own compositions. Imani Coppola and Adam Pallin are Little Jackie. With a blend of old-school R & B, a quirky injection of hip-hop and Cyndi Lauper-esque pop, the duo takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to social absurdities. Record label owner, music enthusiast and DJ, Gilles Peterson’s notoriety stems from his global acclaim as one of the music industry’s leading tastemakers. Known for blending various music genres such as jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, and latin, Gilles airs weekly on BBC’s Radio 1. He continues to support and promote artists through his popular broadcasts and the newly formed record label, Brownswood Records. --- this calendar is brought to you by BrooklynVegan

12 Ophelias @ McCarren Pool

| | Comments (0) | Views (0)
Twelve Ophelias centers on Hamlet's Ophelia coming back to life, out of the water, to try to overcome her history and forge a new destiny for herself. She finds herself in an Appalachian Elsinore, Denmark by way of Deliverance--where Gertrude runs a brothel, Hamlet and Horatio slum it, and nothing is what it seems. In this squarely American and gritty interpretation of the Hamlet myth, Twelve Ophelias asks how it is possible to break old cycles and start afresh when the past so completely permeates your life. The production follows on the heels of the Public Theater's presentation of Hamlet in Central Park, creating an inter-borough dialogue--Hamlet's in the Park, Ophelia's in the Pool. Twelve Ophelias features a live and local roots/bluegrass band, The Jones Street Boys, performing new original music, and showcases a host of talented young performers and designers. The production also highlights the McCarren Park Pool itself as a fascinating part of our urban landscape by placing the performers and audience amidst an Appalachian shanty-town installed inside the empty pool.
