BIFF Film: Man on Wire
Sundance Double Award Winner to Screen at BUEI
Man on Wire, which won the Audience Award as well as the Jury Prize in the World Cinema Documentary category at January's Sundance Film Festival, is the Bermuda International Film Festival's September Film Series selection.
The film will screen on Thursday September 18 in the Tradewinds Auditorium at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute at 6.30 p.m. (note earlier time). Tickets, $8 for BIFF Film Club members and $10 for non-members, can be reserved at info@biff.bm.
On 7 August 1974, Philippe Petit -- a French visionary, street artist, pickpocket, tightrope walker and, above all, an idealist who was prepared to die to realise his dream -- managed to pull off the 'artistic crime of the century'.
At 7.15 a.m. on that day, he stepped out onto a wire strung between the World Trade Centre towers, some 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of New York. In so doing, Petit and his team of accomplices had achieved a dream he had carried with him for more than six years ... ever since he saw an article about the future construction of the Twin Towers.
In a stunning re-enactment that unfolds like a caper film, director James Marsh has made one of the best films of the year. He pieces together the memories of Petit and his accomplices to present an extraordinary film about an extraordinary man.
"Erupts onscreen as one of the most wildly entertaining docs of recent years. An adventure tale that astonishes in every respect." - Robert Koehler, Variety.
"Riveting. This exhilarating film makes you shake your head in amazement." - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.
"Exhilarating." - Stephen Holden, New York Times.
